It is also just like asking, ''Why don't Americans, Britts, Canadians, &
other Europeans use handkerchiefs to cover their mouths when sneezing,
yawning, & sometimes coughing? Maybe some do, but unfortunately, I
haven't seen one yet. I am talking of hankies here, not tissue paper.

This became a symbol of peace because the violence was reduced & Crazy
Confusious decided that all China should live in ''peace & use
chopsticks'' . well they all do now! , but they also use spoons for their
soups. Hunger was another factor involved in the use of chopsticks, small
portions of food & small serving dishes. They had to limit the amount of
food to the population.

Confucius equated knives with acts of aggression, which went against his

non-violent teachings & should not be used to dine.

They may actually be linked to Chinese cooking methods - before
stir-frying the food is cut into tiny pieces, making them easy to
manipulate with a chopstick. (but not to us, because a fork is part of our
essential dinner table!)

The conventional wisdom on this subject is that the Chinese

tools to pick up morsels of food & rice. But there is much evidence to

suggest that their use was originally motivated not by aesthetics but by

practical considerations.

Chopsticks were introduced sometime during the Chou Dynasty, probably a
century or so before the birth of Christ. Until the Chou Dynasty, stir
frying did not exist. But China faced a serious fuel (i.e., wood)
shortage. Forests were cut down to clear land for agriculture to feed a
burgeoning population.

It is commonly known that the Chinese invented chopsticks (or kuaizi in
Viewed 6576 times
Chinese) as a set of instruments to be used when eating but the reason
behind that is not commonly known. Actually, the Chinese were taught to
use chopsticks long before spoons & forks were invented in Europe (the
knife is older, not as an instrument for dining but as weapon). Chopsticks
were strongly advocated by the great Chinese philosopher Confucius
(551-479BC). Chinese people, under the cultivation of Confucianism,
consider the knife & fork bearing sort of violence, like cold weapons.
However, chopsticks reflect gentleness & benevolence, the main moral
teaching of Confucianism. Therefore, instruments used for killing must be
banned from the dining table, & that is why Chinese food is always chopped
into bite size before it reaches the table.

Here is an interesting article.
